Computers and digital technology have touched so many different industries we can’t begin to count. It is the same with dentistry. CEREC is yet another example that is growing in popularity. The acronym CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. Let’s break down the process first, the conditions that suggest this would be a good solution, the benefits of going through the CEREC process and oral care moving forward from the procedure. The CEREC Process

The actual process consists of two units that are responsible for the dental solution. The first unit is called the Acquisition Unit. The part contains a computer with a special designed program and a very unique camera that produces scans of the tooth or teeth in question. It will scan broken portions of a tooth or decay in a tooth that is needing some form of restoration. After the scan is completed and the data is acquired the unit begins to within minutes designing the necessary replacement that your treatment needs. This process takes all of five minutes. The second part of the system is the Milling Unit. The design is sent to this devise and it begins with a block of ceramic. The correct shade of white to match your teeth is first chosen by our Doctors with your approval. The block is inserted into the milling machine and in 10 to 20 minutes the correct design and shape for your ceramic piece is completed. It is bonded to your tooth and just like that the restoration is completed in one visit. Now you can see what the acronym means!

Candidates for CEREC

The crown is the part of the tooth above the gum line that can be visually seen. When this part of the tooth is cracked, chipped, broken, or is experiencing some sort of decay it needs to be addressed and repaired. The conventional dental solutions are dental bonding, a veneer of a form of a crown. If the damage is below the gum line then a different avenue must be pursued. It is advised that if you have any noticeable damage to a tooth that you should schedule an appointment with Smile Eden Prairie for an evaluation. At this time the tooth can be addressed and the decision can be made if you are a candidate for a CEREC restoration. Don’t assume that it works for everyone. There may be certain complications that can only be addressed and decided with the examination.

Benefits of CEREC

The very first benefit is the fact that you no longer need to go through the process of having a physical impression made of your teeth. Digital tools replace trays and silicone. Some people find this process very uncomfortable. The same day solution is quite a change too if you have a busy schedule. The impression no longer goes out to a lab and the extended wait as the crown is fabricated. The CEREC dental crown can indeed look like a real tooth. Sometimes there is something to be said with matching the color on the spot and the technology is spot on. The CEREC crown is also every bit as strong as those that come out of a lab. Both final products are crafted from strong, durable ceramic porcelain. Often times when you have a traditional crown being made you may be sent home with a temporary crown to protect the tooth. With CEREC this step is no longer necessary. Same day crowns can sometimes preserve more of your natural tooth. The digital scanning cuts down on the amount of tooth that needs to be removed to accept the crown. Have we said yet that CEREC is super-fast! The process and final product is not only convenient for you and your timing but for the staff at Smile Eden Prairie as well. With having this advanced digital tooth restoration technology available the 3-D model is made so quickly that is also allows any minor revisions also on the crown on the spot.

CEREC Aftercare

Your CEREC restoration will put you back out into your normal life and timetable in the blink of an eye. Your natural smile will be restored as will your ability to bite, chew and enjoy your favorite foods. Your new restoration is still subjected to common sense in regards to proper oral hygiene. You can crack that new crown by chewing on ice or other hard products so it would make sense to monitor some of your habits. You can and will stain that new crown with tobacco products or drinking colas, tea, coffee and even that glass of red wine in the evening. So your new CEREC restoration needs to be taken care of like the health industry wants you to take care of your natural teeth and gums. Please develop the habit of brushing your teeth well twice a day with a good toothbrush. Teeth and gums. Flossing should be added once a day to remove the plaque between the teeth that the toothbrush cannot reach. If you take care of your teeth in this fashion your new CEREC restoration will last you years. You should also schedule a visit to Smile Eden Prairie twice a year. These visits will start with an oral exam, they will introduce x-rays to keep tabs on what is going on below your gum line, and then they will professionally clean your teeth. A small price to pay to keep your natural smile intact. A smile that is difficult to put a value to when it has so much to do with your self-esteem and your self-confidence. This crosses over from your personal to your professional life. Don’t take your smile for granted. Ask the staff at Smile Eden Prairie about CEREC and see if there are any improvements you can make on your next visit. That’s right, CEREC takes only ONE visit and you’re back on the street!
